Towanda, the county seat, is on the west bank of the Susquehanna River. U.S. Route 6 passes through the center of the borough, leading southeast to Tunkhannock, 60 miles to the Scranton area and 37 miles to Mansfield. The Towanda Historic District and Bradford County Courthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Towanda was home to David Wilmot, a sponsor and eponym of the Wilmot Proviso (1846), intended to ban slavery in western lands gained from Mexico in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.
